Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.
Contact: Up to three hours a week.
Objectives:
After completion of the subject students should have:
- a sound general comprehension of the major recent advances in our philosophical understanding of the nature and structure of knowledge and the roles of experience and reasoning in contributing to this structure;
- a familiarity with the major texts on which these advances are based;
- the ability to explain in detail and critically discuss at least two important aspects of these recent advances.
Content:
An examination of the challenging contemporary arguments for scepticism and their effect on the search for general principles of rational choice.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an assignment of no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
