Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
Through the work undertaken in this subject students should:
- have developed an understanding of some recent attempts to provide an objective grounding for morality;
- be able to think critically about, and to evaluate, the philosophical cogency of those attempts;
- have acquired a background for their own further philosophical reflection on the nature and grounds of morality.
Content:
Contemporary problems in ethics, such as recent attempts to provide an objective grounding for morality.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an assignment of no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
