Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Objectives:
To encourage and assist students:
- in acquiring the competence and understanding necessary to achieve an accurate and reliable assessment of three of the most significant and influential texts in moral philosophy; and
- to appreciate what is distinctive and of abiding interest in these texts.
Content:
A critical study of three of the classic works of moral philosophy: Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, and Mill's Utilitarianism.
Assessment:
One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and two essays of 1,500 words each (25 per cent each).
