Objectives:
By the end of the subject the student will have:
- completed supervised research and reading on traditional or contemporary Japan, or the relationship between them, using Japanese language sources;
- mastered the specialized language needed for a specific research area;
- become familiar with different types of Japanese language materials including satellite television and newspapers, and had discussions in Japanese with visiting Japanese specialists;
- made use of Western language materials and developed an understanding of the different approaches and methodologies in the study of Japan, particularly through a comparison of Japanese and Western language materials.
Content:
Research on an approved topic (other than the thesis topic) using Western and Japanese language sources.
Assessment:
A total of 6,000 words in written work.
