Prerequisite: Japanese 5B or satisfactory completion of a placement test.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On conclusion of the subject students will have attained a level of spoken and reading skills which will enable them to handle a basic level of scholarly texts.

Content:

The subject consists of two 2-hour sessions each week. All classes are conducted entirely in Japanese. The reading materials used cover such topics as business/economics, history, law, politics, etc. Students will develop spoken skills through discussion and debates.

Assessment:

Third Year: Assignments and quizzes totalling not more than 2,500 words in written work; one 2-hour written examination; one oral/aural perception test (maximum 30 minutes). Fourth Year: Assignments and quizzes totalling not more than 2,500 words in written work; one 2-hour written examination; one oral/aural perception test (maximum 30 minutes); one translation exercise (equivalent to not more than 1,000 words in written work).
