158-124 Japanese Civilisation Past and Present

Note: Completion of this subject is required for a major in Japanese. Students who are unable to take this subject in the first year of their course may fulfil the requirement by taking 158-267 or 158-367 in the second or third year of their course. Content:

An introductory subject on Japan. Examines major themes in Japanese civilisation and their role in Japanese life today to provide the socio-cultural content for language acquisition.

Assessment:

A 2-hour written examination (50%), written work not exceeding 1,600 words (40%), tutorial participation (10%).
