Objectives:
On completion of the subject, students will have acquired:
- a reasonable understanding of early development of main areas of Islamic Studies;
- the ability to identify and use some of the important primary sources of Islam;
- a good understanding of the methodologies followed in selected Shari'ah related areas of study;
- a good understanding of strengths and weaknesses in the so-called 'traditional' methods and 'modern' methods of research in Islamic Studies;
- the ability to understand current state of research in selected areas of Islamic Studies;
- the ability to undertake a small scale research project in Islamic Studies and present the results orally and in writing.
Content:
Advanced studies in Islamic primary sources; early development of Shari'ah and its areas of study with particular emphasis on methodology; issues in traditional methods versus modern methods of research in Islamic Studies; Orientalism and Western studies on Islam: methodological issues; current state of research in selected areas of Islamic studies.
Assessment:
1 essay and assignments totalling not more than 6,000 words.
