Objectives:
On completion of the subject, students will:
- be able to trace the historical development of Islamic thought in the past 1400 years;
- be able to understand the social, political and historical circumstances in which contemporary Islamic thought began to develop in the modern period;
- have a good understanding of main trends of contemporary Islamic thought with particular emphasis on Revivalism, Neo-Revivalism, Modernism and Neo-Modernism, their characteristics and the impact of these trends on Muslim society.
Content:
History of Islamic thought; the social, political and historical circumstances in which contemporary Islamic thought began to develop; development and characteristics of Revivalist, Neo-Revivalist, Modernist and Neo-Modernist thought as well as the impact of these trends of thought on contemporary Muslim society.
Assessment:
1 essay and assignments totalling not more than 6,000 words.
