150-282/382 Mythologies: Literature, History and Society in Modern Greece

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of Department. No knowledge of the Modern Greek language is presupposed.

Contact: Up to three hours per week.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have a familiarity with major Modern Greek literary texts of the 20th Century; ability to discuss them in their social, historical and ideological context.

Content:

The concept of myth is explored in major works of 20th-century Modern Greek literature set in their social, ideological and historical context. All texts are examined in English translation.

Assessment:

Written work up to 3,000 words (50 per cent) and a 2-hour written examination (50 per cent).
