150-277/377 The Greeks in Australia

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Mr J B Burke.

Prerequisite: Any two level-one Arts subjects or permission of the Head of Department. No knowledge of the Modern Greek language is presupposed.

Contact: Up to three hours per week.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have a sound understanding of the reasons for Greek emigration to Australia, the structures and nature of the Greek community and its organisations in Australia, the preoccupations and problems of Greeks in Australia, and of issues relating to the scholarly analysis and interpretation of these topics.

Content:

Greek migrants in Australia and their children; the Greek community.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
