Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- relay information to others in the target language (in face-to-face situations or by telephone);
- have sufficient understanding of the style and conventions of Arabic business letter, memos and short reports;
- write Arabic business letters, memos, notices, short reports using commonly used technical terms of accounting, banking, finance, trade and commerce;
- read and understand annual financial statements of business organisations in Arabic;
- interpret and present orally and in writing in Arabic selected business related information from newspapers, reference books, yearbooks, directories and annual reports;
- translate simple correspondence;
- understand the cultural context of the world of business in the Arab World.
Content:
The style and layout of a variety of written business genres in Arabic; annual financial statements of businesses; collecting, interpreting and presenting business-related information from a variety of sources in Arabic; business terminology in Arabic; cultural context of the world of business.
Assessment:
Written assignments of not more than 2,000 words, not more than 2-hours of written examination, and not more than 15 minutes of aural/oral test. In addition to these 4th year students should write an essay of not more than 1,000 words. Weighting of assessment components will be made known at commencement of the unit.
