1. Communication Skills, Faculty of Arts (v3, p38) : Prev:145-133
Credit points: 12.5 points (1st year) 16.7 points (2nd year)
Prerequisite: This subject is primarily designed for native speakers of English. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on IELTS. Admission to this subject will be subject to a placement test. Students wishing to take this class must demonstrate a high level of electronic, written and oral communication skills.
Contact: One 1-hour lecture and two obligatory 1-hour tutorials each week. The subject is offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2.
Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- write high quality articles and reports in a range of genres and for a range of purposes and audiences, on specialised and general topics;
- speak confidently and effectively in public meetings and in group discussions;
- devise and use graphic, electronic and electronic communication aids.
Content:
A range of hands-on activities will be provided, and off-campus communication research and projects will be encouraged. There will be specialist visiting lecturers, demonstrations and practice with multi-media technology.
Assessment:
Continuous assessment tasks, and a major project involving group and individual work, using all four areas of communication skills. Total 5,000 words.
