Prerequisite: Normally one first year Anthropology subject (12.5 points).
Contact: A 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial a week.

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- have an understanding of the construction of gender in a variety of the world's societies;
- have gained a knowledge of gender-based systems of social classification in non-Western societies;
- have acquired a knowledge of contemporary critiques of the representation of womení s and mení s lives in ethnography; and
- have explored problems of gender bias in ethnographic research and writing.
Content:
Cross-cultural and comparative perspectives on the social construction of gender, with a focus on ideologies of femininity and masculinity; gender-based classification systems; interrelations of gender, power and authority.
Assessment:
Written work or equivalent totalling 5,000 words.
