Prerequisite: Normally one first year Anthropology subject (12.5 points).
Contact: Two hours of lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week.
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- have examined anthropological and cross-cultural perspectives on illness, suffering and curing in non-Western societies;
- have engaged in practical projects bearing on the clinical ethnography of South-East Asian concepts of illness and traditional curing systems; and
- have acquired a knowledge of the methods, analytical techniques and theories which medical anthropologists employ in the cross-cultural study of health and illness.
Content:
Ethnological study of suffering, illness and healing rituals in South-East Asian cultures.
Assessment:
Written work or equivalent totalling 5,000 words.
