Contact: Two hours of lectures and a one-hour tutorial per week. Film screenings may require up to two additional hours attendance per week.

Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should:
- have acquired a basic knowledge of the utility of film in ethnographic research and the history of ethnographic film.
- . have an understanding of the relationship of ethnography to the media in which it is composed.
- . have acquired a knowledge of the theory, methods, and major empirical results of visual anthropology.
- . have examined critically problems of text and representation in ethnography.
Content:
An introduction to visual anthropology requiring critical reading of texts on the theory and methods of ethnographic film making and the analysis of a selected corpus of historical and contemporary ethnographic films which will be screened during the semester.
Assessment:
(1) A requirement for this subject is that students keep a journal of notes about the weekly anthropological films. Students may nominate their four best entries for assessment (2,000 words), (40%). (2) One 2,000 word essay on the theory of ethnographic film making in relation to a corpus of films on a particular culture or culture complex (40%). (3) Take-home examination equivalent to one hour (20%).
