The place of science in European imperial expansion. 'Colonial' vs 'metropolitan' science; the nature and growth of Australian scientific institutions. Science and government in Australian history. The question of professionalism. 'Pure' vs 'applied' research. The education and training of scientists. The changing public image of science.

Assessment:

Written work of up to 5,000 words; a final 3-hour examination.
