Contact: Two hours of lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week. Regular attendance and contribution to discussion in tutorials are expected.

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- understand the basic arguments for and critiques of cultural relativism;
- understand the significance of biological evolution for explaining human social behaviour;
- have a general familiarity with the range of forms of social structure and social organisation to be found in ethnographic literature;
- have a general understanding of the conditions under which social change occurs;
- have a background of relevant ethnographic knowledge on which to base further anthropological studies.
Content:
An introduction to the anthropological study of forms of human behaviour and social organisation and social change, with an emphasis on the descriptive analysis of particular societies and cultures.
Assessment:
Written work of up to 3,000 words for the semester and a 1-hour class test.
