131-462 Archives Workshop

Year 4 History.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Coordinator: Dr J Lack.

Contact: One two-hour seminar each week. Students should expect to spend up to four hours per week working on materials at Archives during normal opening hours (9-1, 2-5 weekdays) under the supervision of archives staff.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should be able to: understand the nature and purposes of archival listings, assess the potential of collections for historical research, and demonstrate the ability to research and write a finished piece based on archival sources.

Content:

An introduction to the categorisation and descriptive listing of archival records, the assessment of collections for historical research, and researching and writing history based on archival sources.

Assessment:

Three pieces of written work: one exercise in the descriptive listing of archives; one exercise in the assessment of a collection for historical research; one research essay of 3,000 words based upon archival records. These exercises and the essay will relate to archival materials from the one collection, and they may provide opportunities for small group as well as individual work. Total assessment will not exceed 6,000 words.
