131-439 The History of Teaching and the Teaching of History

Year 4 History.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able: demonstrate a general knowledge of the main developments in secondary teaching in Victoria in the twentieth century; understand how the training of teachers has been influenced by both educational and non-educational criteria; demonstrate an awareness of the principal changes in the manner and content of history teaching; and develop an appreciation of the main intellectual and philosophical influences on the place of history in the curriculum; develop an understanding of the nature of source materials for the research and writing of Victorian educational history, and gain experience in the use of some of those sources.

Content:

A survey of issues such as teacher training, the supply and demand of teachers, legislation and its political background, with a focus on the training of History teachers in particular pedagogies.

Assessment:

Written work amounting to no more than 6,000 words.
