131-429 Patterns of Colonisation

Year 4 History.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Contact: A 2-hour seminar per week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Upon completion of this subject students will be familiar with the principal traditions in colonial and postcolonial theorising, particularly within the framework of historical materialism. Students will be able to apply a range of major theories to particular colonial situations of their choice.

Content:

This subject will examine a range of theories of imperialism, colonisation and world-systems, from classical Marxism to Dependency Theory, social formations theory and postcolonialism. Theories will be considered in relation to empirical colonial situations.

Assessment:

Written work amounting to no more than 6,000 words.
