131-414 Australian Sport: Makers and Readers

Year 4 History.

Prerequisite: The prerequisite for entry to Australian Studies fourth year is a major in Australian Studies with an overall average grade of H2A or better including two Australian Studies semester units, and admission to fourth year in another area of study within the Faculty. Students undertaking an Honours programme in English, Fine Arts, History or Politics are also able to enrol in Australian Studies Fourth Year semester units as part of their Honours programme in their respective Departments

Contact: One 2-hour seminar per week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should be able to: demonstrate an awareness of the major interpretations o the significance of sport in Australian cultural life and of the theoretical and value assumptions on which these are based display the ability to analyse and use for research a variety of different sources, including the print and non-print media, memoirs, oral history, ethnographic studies and literature, as well as more orthodox archival materials; utilise these skills in defining a topic for r research, and in producing an essay of approximately 6,000 words.

Content:

This subject examines the changing representation of sport in twentieth century Australian cultural life and in particular the shaping of Australian sporting culture by the media and its reception by spectators and participants.

Assessment:

Written work not exceeding 6,000 words.
