131-409 Researching and Writing in Women'S Studies

Credit points: 16.7 Points (Fourth Year) Convener: Dr Vera Mackie.

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should be able to:-

understand debates around recent feminist theory and methodology and apply this understanding to specific problems involved in undertaking feminist research in social sciences and humanities.

Students should also develop skills in presenting the results of their research effectively in spoken and written form.

Content:

This subject surveys recent developments in feminist theory and feminist methodoogy, including the concepts of gender, class, and ethnicity; debates between liberal, socialist and radical feminists; and the contributions of postcolonial feminists and queer theorists and considers techniques of textual analysis, analysis of visual materials, feminist criticism, interviewing, and archival research.

Assessment:

Written assignments to a total of 6,000 words.
