131-302 Historical Theory and Research

Credit points: 16.7 3rd year.

This subject is a prerequisite for entry into Fourth Year Honours.

Coordinator: Professor P Grimshaw, Professor P McPhee.

Prerequisite: Completion of a major in History.

Contact: One-and-a half-hour lecture per week, plus weekly one-hour tutorials.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

To introduce students to significant issues in the theory and practice of history; to develop skills in research and writing as a preparation for the fourth-year honours thesis.

Content:

An examination of contemporary issues in historical theory as they affect historical research, and a guide to the formulation of a historical research topic with preparation of an appropriate bibliography.

Assessment:

Class participation (10%), an essay on historical theory of 2,000 words (40%), a research essay with annotated bibliography of 3,000 words (50%).
