Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to: demonstrate a general knowledge of the geography, society and history of the Mediterranean region, especially Spain, Italy and Greece, over the last 100 years; show awareness of relevant discussions of the idea that there may be a shared Mediterranean culture; demonstrate a familiarity with continuities and discontinuities in the history of the region in recent times; show awareness of the main concepts employed by scholars in the field e. g. ., family, village and town, honour and shame, patrons and clients, migration, religions, centre and periphery, tourism; demonstrate a knowledge of the major political developments in the region since the late nineteenth century; and be aware of the place of the Mediterranean in the European and world imagination.
Content:
A study of the Mediterranean region, in particular Spain, Italy and Greece over the last 100 years.
Assessment:
One essay of 2,500 words (50%), one essay of 1,500 words (30%), one class paper (20%).
