Prerequisite: Normally, 25 points of first year History.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

By the end of the subject, students should: have an appreciation of the social, political and economic forces that have shaped Britain's development since the Great War; be able to analyse the substance and impact of ideas such as collectivism; and be aware of the issues raised by Britain's altered world role.

Content:

The economy, society and political framework of Britain after the Great War; the rise of organised labour; the 'thirties' (myths of the Depression, Fascism; impact of the war in Spain); imperial issues and appeasement, WWII and austerity; finding a role having lost an empire, 1956-1979.

Assessment:

A research essay of 3,000 words (60%) and tutorial-based document exercises totalling 2,000 words (40%).
