Objectives:

Students completing this subject should have an understanding of the principal social movements that have operated in twentieth-century Australia, the ways they have mobilised, their sources of support, language, objectives, strategies and outcomes. They will have considered the contested meanings of society and the social movements, subjecting social movements to critical scrutiny, in contextualising them and evaluating their claims.

Content:

The principal movements for social change in Australia from the beginning of the twentieth century to the recent past. Movements considered will include the labour movement, feminism and movements of sexual liberation, environmentalists, multiculturalists and indigenous peoples.

Assessment:

Class work and written work totalling not more than 5,000 words.
