Prerequisite: Normally, 25 points of first year History.

Contact: A 2-hour lecture and a tutorial a week.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

The objective of this subject is to familiarise students with major issues in migration studies and central themes in Australian migration history; to develop an awareness of the impact of migration upon Australian society; to create an awareness of the richly diverse sources for studying migration history in Australia, and to provide opportunities during the subject for students to pursue their own researches in the subject.

Content:

European and Asian migration to Australia in the twentieth century, applying ideas and concepts in immigration history in the Australian context. The subject will attempt to develop an understanding of the character of the major migration to Australia in the twentieth century (especially the British, Jewish, Displaced Persons, Italian, Greek and Indo-Chinese migrations), and of the leaving, arriving and settling experiences of the migrants; of the Australian response, (including that of government and mainstream Australian institutions.

Assessment:

Written work in the form of essays and class papers up to 5,000 words.
