Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to: demonstrate a general knowledge of the culture, society and political history of Germany between 1914 and 1945; understand the causes, character, and consequences of the Nazi movement; and understand the structure, functions, and major policies of the Hitler state.
Content:
German society and politics from 1914 to 1945, focussing on the origins, development and meaning of the Nazi dictatorship from 1933. Special attention will be paid to the Holocaust, the impact of Nazi totalitarianism on the family and society, and the resistance to Nazism, including the problem of desertion of the army of the Third Reich.
Assessment:
Two essays totalling not more than 5,000 words.
