Contact: One 2.5-hour seminar per week.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
At the conclusion of the subject students will have:
- a familiarity with the major dramas of Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811);
- an awareness of Kleist's place in the German literary tradition;
- an appreciation of the social and historical context of Kleist's dramatic work;
- an understanding of the problems of dramatic form posed by Kleist's experimental approach to writing plays.
Content:
This subject, which will be held in German, will introduce students to the work of one of German literature's major dramatists. Heinrich von Kleist's plays were written during the Napoleonic era and reflect the chaos of contemporary history as perceived by one of Germany's major literary talents. Beginning with Kleist's first completed tragedy, Die Familie Schroffenstein, the subject will go on to consider his two comedies, Der zerbrochne Krug and Amphitryon. An interpretation of his great tragic drama, Penthesilea, forms the central part of the subject and leads into a discussion of the problems of writing tragedy at the beginning of the 19th century. A reading of his last play, Prinz Friedrich von Homburg, allows a consideration of Kleist's complex attitudes to the Prussian state.
Assessment:
Written work of no more than 6,000 words.
