Objectives:
At the end of this subject students will have:
- engaged in sophisticated discourse in German;
- improved their reading comprehension of the language and their written and spoken command of it;
- gained an understanding of Germany and German society between 1871 and 1914, of Germany's greatest novelist in the 19th century and of the concept of realism in 19th century literature.
Content:
When in 1871, after the founding of the German empire, a rapidly growing Berlin became the capital of the new powerful united Germany, a type of realistic novel emerged which made Berlin the focus of social and societal analysis. The most important Berlin novelist, between 1870 and 1900, indeed the only one whose works have survived, is Theodor Fontane. The subject will put four of Fontane's 'Berlin' novels into the contemporary context and analyse them: Irrungen Wirrungen, Frau Jenny Treibel, Die Poggenpuhls, Mathilde Mö hring.
Assessment:
Written work of no more than 6,000 words.
