Prerequisite: A pass in 126-270/370 or an equivalent subject.
Contact: Three hours a week: a language class, a lecture and a seminar.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subjects students will
- have consolidated and extended knowledge of the Old Norse language;
- have developed reading skills in Old Norse so that they can read Old Norse texts with the aid of a dictionary;
- be able to read a short saga in Old Norse (Hakonar saga gó da);
- be able to survey Old Norse literature, with a concentration on five sagas in English translation;
- be introduced to the mythology of Ancient Scandinavia.
Content:
An introduction to the Old Norse language and a survey of the history and culture of the Viking Era (c. 800-1050 AD).
Assessment:
Weekly assignments in the language; a 1-hour test in September and a 3-hour examination at the end of semester.
