116-456 Espaces Francophones: Converging and Diverging Cultures

Year 4 French.

Credit points: 16.7 fourth year

Coordinator: Dr Bernadette Dejean de la Bâ tie.

Prerequisite: A major in French (Post-VCE stream) or equivalent

Contact: 2 hours of lectures/seminars a week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• understand and appreciate the historical facts, the opposing ideologies involved in the making and consolidating of francophone cultures, as well as the complexity of francophone societies;
• identify and analyse the specificity of francophone cultures as well as the influence of French culture in the works of French-speaking authors from regions previously protected or colonised by France;
• present an informed and unbiased point of view in discussing and explaining facts and concepts.

Content:

The range of topics to be covered are French colonisation and decolonisation, colonialism and neo-colonialism, Francophonie, francophone cultures and identities, French culture.

Assessment:

One seminar paper (45 min), subsequently written up (3,000 words); one essay (3,000 words).
