Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
Students who complete this subject should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the major facets of the French experience of WWII;
- demonstrate an understanding of the problems involved in the integration of this experience into the national identity;
- evaluate various types of written and visual documents in relation to the problem of the national memory of WWII.
Content:
A study, via a selection of written and visual texts, of how French cultural production has been obsessed with the problem of remembering - and trying to forget - the experience of the Second World War.
Assessment:
One class paper (written up in French: 1,500 words); one document analysis (1,000 words); one essay (3,000 words - accompanied by a 500 word ré sumé in French).
