116-452 Applied Literary Theory

Year 4 French.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Prerequisite: A major in French (Post-VCE French stream), or equivalent.

Contact: Two hours of lectures/seminars a week.

At the end of the subject, students should be able to:

Content:

Feminist theory will be studied and applied to texts by such writers as Duras. Structuralist theory will be applied in studying novels; psycho-criticism and reader-response theory will inform interpretation of poetry, notably that of Mallarmé .

Assessment:

One class paper (3,000 words) (40 per cent); one essay (3,000 words) in French (60 per cent).
