Objectives:
Students completing this subject should have an understanding and knowledge of:
- the position and distribution of Romance Languages around the world;
- the sounds and basic structures of the Romance languages, as well as essential grammatical notions important to the study of these languages;
- major differences and mutual influences amongst the Romance languages;
- the evolution of Latin into its daughter languages and dialects.
Content:
The Romance languages (in particular French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese), their position in global and social contexts, their sounds, basic structures and related concepts, differences and mutual influences of the Romance languages, aspects of their history, and development from Latin.
Assessment:
Three practical assignments (30%), one quiz (20%) and one final test no more than two hours in duration (50%).
