Objectives:
At the end of the subject, students should be able to:
- analyse a play using different recent methods;
- show a knowledge of the evolution of French theatre;
- demonstrate a general understanding of the social, political and ideological context of each play.
Content:
A variety of plays from different centuries will be analysed. The structure of tragedy will be explored from Corneille, Racine to the contemporary dramas of Anouilh or Beckett; the evolution of comedy will be studied from Moliè re to Ionesco. This study will be related to the recent analysis of dramaturgy.
Assessment:
One class paper (2,000 words) (40 per cent); one essay (3,000 words) in French (60 per cent).
