Objectives:
At the end of this subject, students should be able to:
- analyse the narrative structure of various novels;
- show a knowledge of the evolution of prose narration in French literature;
- demonstrate critical awareness of the social, political and ideological context of each novel.
Content:
A study of a selection of novels of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries by Mme de la Fayette, Diderot, Stendhal, Balzac, or Flaubert, as well as contemporary novels by Gide, Vian, Butor, Le Clé zio, or Duras. The additional use of certain theoretical texts will facilitate the understanding of the development of prose narration in French literature.
Assessment:
One class paper (2,000 words) (40 per cent); one essay (3,000 words) in French (60 per cent).
