111-445 Albrect DÜ Rer: A Catalyst for Artistic Change in Sixteenth Century Germany

Year 4 Fine Arts.

Prerequisite: Two Art History subjects at second or third year level.

Contact: A 2 hour seminar each week.

• Objectives: Students completing this subject should, in addition to the above:
• have an understanding of Dü rer's artistic achievements in the areas of painting, printing and publishing;
• have an understanding of Dü rer's theoretical writing and his role in the humanist circles of the Imperial City of Nuremberg.

Content:

Discussion of Albrecht Dü rer's contributions to the cultural transformations in sixteenth century Germany. His role as a teacher, theoretician, printmaker, publisher and painter reflects his active involvement in Renaissance Nuremberg.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
