111-444 Making Gender: Art and Spectatorship in the West 1850-1995

Year 4 Fine Arts.

Note: No student may receive credit for both this subject and 111-344/444 Gender and Artistic Practice in Europe, America and Australia 1850-1980.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Contact: Three hours of lectures and seminars per week and five 2-hour screenings.

Objectives:

In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:

• have a knowledge of theories of the gaze and their development in relationship to a variety of visual media.
• have a knowledge of feminist scholarship as it relates to the formation of the gendered subject.
• have an understanding of Lacanian theory and its diverse commentaries.

Content:

An examination of theories of gender and spectatorship in western visual media in Europe, America and Australia. 1850-1990.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
