Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second or third year level

Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should
- have an understanding of pastoral modes in western art;
- be familiar with the main literature covering the field;
- be able to recognise pastoral modes in a diverse range of western cultural forms
Content:
The subject will focus on the persistence of pastoralism as a form in western culture and will begin with representations of such figures as the ploughman in medieval art, moving through to the representation of the locus amoenus in Venetian painting, to pastoral's dominance as an art from throughout the eighteenth century, finishing with a consideration of its continuing place in the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Pastoral's appearance in the art forms of the new world, in colonial and post-colonial cultures and in Chinese painting will be considered.
Assessment:
One class paper of 2,000 words and one essay of 4,000 words.
