Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second- or third-year level

Objectives:
In addition to the above students completing this subject should:
- have an understanding of the historical and theoretical foundations of visual culture in Australia in the 1950s
- have the ability to analyse specific instances of cultural practice from an historical and theoretical point of view
- have the ability to conduct independent research using catalogued sources and bibliographical indexes
Content:
The subject will examine issues of regional identity, national mythology, gender and ethnicity as they appear within the visual arts, architecture, graphic design, industrial design and the mass media in Australia in the 1950s.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
