Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second or third-year level.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week.
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should, in addition to the above:
- have gained an understanding of concepts of the sacred as developed in contemporary theories of anthropology and ritual.
- be familiar with scholarly debate on the nature of symbolism and iconography.
- have a broad understanding of the role of imagery in varieties of religious practice, including public ritual and mystical thought.
- have the ability to apply these theoretical and methodological considerations to particular monuments or other works of art from the European and other traditions.
Content:
Aspects of the interaction between religious culture and the European discourse of visual representation.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
