Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second or third-year level.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week.
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should, in addition to the above:
- have a knowledge of the techniques and methods involved in the study of the illuminated book.
- have a knowledge of the basic types of liturgical and devotional illuminated books and their decorative programs;
- have acquired skills in cataloguing illuminated manuscripts.
- have a familiarity with the stylistic and iconographic developments of Gothic illumination.
Content:
Studies in Book Illumination from the 13th to the 15th centuries.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
