Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second or third-year level.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week.
Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:
- have developed skills in research with primary source materials of the period;
- have an advanced knowledge of the painting techniques and materials used in the last third of the nineteenth century;
- have an understanding of the critical writing of the period;
- have a familiarity with the art of at least one regional culture in the late nineteenth century.
Content:
A research seminar investigating the birth and dissemination of plein-air techniques and subject-matter in Western painting, and its relationship with Impressionist painting.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
