111-415 Art and Theory in Paris, Matisse and Picasso

Year 4 Fine Arts.

Note: No student may receive credit for both this subject and 111-415 Art and Theory in Paris.

Prerequisite: Two art history subjects at second or third- year level.

Content:

A research seminar investigating the two key figures of the pre-1918 avant-garde in terms of recent scholarship. Issues treated include the academic sources of radical art; the dealer-critic system; Fauvism and the Salon; nationalism, anarchism and art; literary thematics; expression and the body; and significations of cubism and collage.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
