Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:
- have an understanding of the historical and theoretical foundations of the interaction of art and mass culture in the 1960s.
- be familiar with a variety of methodological approaches to the study of cultural practices, particularly those of the Frankfurt School, feminist theory of the 1970s and 1980s, Roland Barthes, and the Birmingham School.
- have the ability to appraise critically the relevance of the above to analysis of specific instances of cultural practice.
- have the ability to conduct independent research using catalogued sources and bibliographical indexes.
Content:
The interaction of art, mass culture and cultural politics in the 1960s.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5,000 words.
