Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- understand the various constraints at work (ideological, moral, financial) which influence the film making process;
- appreciate the nature of these constraints by engaging in a close reading of a number of films and their re-makes;
- understand the extent to which aesthetic concerns are influenced by industrial, social and moral factors.
Content:
A study of selected films and their re-makes. Topics will include; the nature of popular taste; constraints on the film making process; censorship; popular film and its characteristics; the star system; evolving film structures and styles; the relationship between film and society; the appeal of the postmodern
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays or take-home examinations totalling 5,000 words.
