Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- understand the impact and historical development of various theoretical approaches to genre criticism
- demonstrate knowledge of specific genres in terms of their history of production and reception
- differentiate genre films in terms of their relation to stages in the development of film genre
Content:
A close study of one or two Hollywood genres through their various stages of development. Topics include: the historical development of genre criticism; evolution theories of generic stages; generic crossovers; the relationship between auteurs, stars, studios and audiences; the influence of Hollywood genres outside the U. S. A; the relationship between filmic reality and social reality.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays or take-home examinations totalling 5,000 words.
