Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should
- be familiar with recent theories of the body and its representation.
- have an understanding of the history of the body.
- be familiar with debates surrounding writing about the body in Australia
Content:
The subject offers critical perspectives on theories of the body examining in particular visual representations of bodies in Australia from Cook's voyages to the present. Convict bodies, maternal bodies, black bodies, bodies on the beach and post-human bodies are among the areas considered.
Assessment:
Written work of up to 5,000 words.

- be familiar with issues surrounding the representation of the body in Australia;
- be familiar with theoretical debates about the body and its representation;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding in writing and discussion of the history of the body.
