Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should
- demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of different aspects of seventeenth-century Northern European artistic production
- demonstrate a familiarity with the debate between traditional art historians and the proponents of more recent methodological approaches to the study of seventeenth-century Dutch art and culture.
Content:
The subject examines Northern European art of the seventeenth century with particular reference to the relationship between art and society, the art of Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Jan Steen, the distinctions between Northern European and Italian art, and the issues involved in the interpretation of scenes of everyday life.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5,000 words.
